Coleraine u16 and Institute met in the Northwest Cup final at Coleraine show grounds on Wednesday night. Both teams were at full strength for this eagerly awaited encounter. These two teams had finished second and third in the league so this was going to be a
tight game. Coleraine settled better at the start of the game playing some good passing football causing the Institute defence some problems but the Institute keeper was in good form and kept the Bannsiders at bay. The first clear chance of the game fell to Che Bradley of Coleraine The ball was crossed in from the right it eluded the Institute defence and fell to Che Bradley at the back post but his shot was blocked by a defender and went over the cross bar for a corner. Coleraine kept the pressure on having all of the play but were just unable to break down a resolute Institute defence. Institute took the lead against the run of play. On a rare raid upfield Coleraine conceded a corner on the right, the corner was cleared but fell to the feet of an Institute player, the Coleraine players afforded him too much time and he volleyed the ball into the net giving the Coleraine goal keeper Justin Cassells no chance. The Coleraine players did not let their heads go down as they had been the better team up to this and straight from the kick off they carried on playing good football creating chances but were unable to score. Near the end of the half Josh Rohdich had the ball in the net for Coleraine but his celebrations were short lived as the referee had blown up for a free kick just out side the area. The free kick was taken by Steven Doherty a shot which went narrowly wide. Half Time

The second half of the game was just the same as the first half Coleraine having all of the ball creating good chances but the institute keeper and defence was equal to everything. Institute were soaking up all the pressure and hitting Coleraine on the break but when called on the Coleraine keeper was also in fine form. The same pattern of the game continued for the whole of the half Coleraine forcing corner after corner building up pressure on the Institute defence but Coleraine were just unable to breach the defensive
barrier. A change of formation and personnel by Coleraine helped to create more pressure but the goal did not come despite everything being tried. It was just not going to happen for Coleraine in this very tight game with Institute winning by the early goal. Full Time
