The under 11's Team Two found themselves up against a well drilled team from Portaferry, in the NIBFA Cup, and they were not helped by the very blustery conditions at The Crescent.  The first half had Coleraine playing with the wind behind them and they had a few early chances to capitalise on the conditions, being unlucky not to score a least one.  Injuries to goalkeeper, Greg Kelly and defender Dylan Hull meant an early reshuffle of the the team, which did not assist their cause.  Portaferry kept the ball on the ground and a nice passing move led to the first goal late in the first half, taking them into half time 1-0 up.  As the 2nd half progressed the young Coleraine Team tired and Portaferry were able to make the most of the conditions, playing a lot of high balls on top of the Coleraine goalkeeper.  Goals were inevitable and Portaferry finished the match running out 5-0 winners.

Darren and Keith would like to thank all involved for their efforts and good luck to Portaferry in the next round.

Coleraine FC Academy Under 11`s One travelled to Dundonald for their Quarter Final of the NIBFA Cup against a strong Dungoyne side. The first half was very tight with the early stages seeing Coleraine having most of the play with the wind to their backs they put Dungoyne under a lot of pressure. The home team defenders were well organised and fought hard to keep the Coleraine attacks at bay. On 10 minutes Coleraine had their first sighter on goal but Curtis Rodgers found his shot blocked for a corner. Then on 12 minutes the ball fell to Jamie Ellis on the edge of box his shot agonisingly went over the bar. Then on 15 minutes Dungoyne broke and forced a corner which wasn’t cleared and the home team capitalised their player poking the ball in 1-0 against the run of play at this stage. Coleraine kept attacking the Dungoyne team and on 26 minutes got their reward when Joshua McGregor put in Curtis Rodgers whose pace took him past 2 defenders and a glorious shot into the corner to deservedly level the score. This was now a great Cup Tie both teams attacking looking for the advantage Half time 1-1.

The second half saw the game as tight as the first half both teams missing glorious chances to get in front then Coleraine broke Lewis Ritchie played in Andrew Black his shot was deflected by the defender hit the post and Curtis Rodgers just couldn’t get his foot cleanly around the ball on the rebound his shot just going wide. Dungoyne a very good passing side started to play some good stuff but Coleraine kept them at bay. A free kick was then awarded on 15 minutes on the right side of the box again Coleraine failed to clear this set piece the ball landed at the feet of their forward whose shot flew passed Tom Hegan in goal. 2-1 Dungoyne. Coleraine kept trying to press Dungoyne back and forcing corner after corner but they just couldn’t make the break through they deserved. With 3 minutes left Coleraine tried to get back into this Cup tie and Dungoyne held firm and just counter attacked with some great football and skill from their winger they stretched the Coleraine defence to score a well taken goal 3-1. Coleraine pushed on again to get something and again Dungoyne broke to score breaking Coleraine’s hearts with another goal in the last seconds to send Coleraine crashing out of this seasons NIBFA Cup 4-1. Full Time.

The coaching staff would like to congratulate the team on their performance today against a very well organised Dungoyne side who play great football. We matched them in all areas and the 2nd goal proved very important if we would have got it when we hit the post this game would have been very different indeed. But we must start to learn to defend better on set pieces. Thanks again to all the supporters who travelled up to support the team we had more than the home team. We wish Dungoyne all the best in the Semi Final and thank them for the hospitality providing the team some lunch after the game.

A great Cup run for the Wee Bannsiders following an impressive league campaign, competitively only being beaten by 2 teams now all season in the league and cup, is a good stepping stone for our future success. Well done boys.

Coleraine Team: Tom Hegan, Lewis Mitchell, Josh Greene, Willy Millar, Andrew Black, Jordan Walker, Adam Harte, Josh McGregor, Lewis Ritchie, Jamie Ellis, Curtis Rodgers,  Joshua Waddell, Carl Platt, Andrew Bennett, Ryan Kane.

We now look forward to next Saturday afternoon when we play against Bertie Peacocks in the Mini Friendly Tournament.

Magherafelt Sky Blues v Coleraine Academy (U-13s) – NIBFA Cup Saturday 13th December 2008

The Under 13 team travelled to Magherafelt on Saturday to play Magherafelt Sky Blues in the NIBFA cup. On a sticky pitch the team played well and were unfortunate to lose 3-1. Coleraine started slowly  and found themselves 3-0 down after 20 minutes. The first Magherafelt goal came after 10 minutes after mix-up in the Coleraine midfield resulted in the ball breaking to the centre forward who finished well. The second goal was rather dubious with the forward appearing to be offside when the ball was played through but Coleraine got on with it and began to play well with the midfield of Corey McMullan, Michael McCraild and Markus Condren settling into a passing game allowing them to release centre-forward Ryan Miller on to a number of through balls. The third goal came against the run of play when a defensive mix-up allowed the Magherafelt forward to get hold of the ball and shoot, the ball looping over the otherwise excellent goalkeeper, Reece Gordon. Coleraine started to play some good football right through the team in the second half.

The defence remained solid with  the combination of Conor O’Hare and Dylan Wall in the centre assisted by Matthew Douglas and Nicky Kerr in the full back positions. Nicholas played particularly well and kept trying to pass the ball. The midfield started passing the ball well and Jack Kennedy worked tirelessly on the right wing both defensively and in attack and played some very effective through balls. Coleraine had many chances in the second half with Ryan Miller, Jack Kennedy and Dylan Wall coming close.

Markus Condren had a near miss after a left foot effort in the 50th Minute. Michael McCraild also came close with a free kick a few minutes later. The consolation goal came in the 55th minute when Ryan Miller slotted the ball home after some excellent passing between Jack Kennedy, Michael McCraild and Markus Condren.

David Brewster came on for Matthew Douglas who was feeling the effects of flu. David played well in defence when he came on. Brent Smith came on for Steffan Boyd on the left wing and made a few probing runs. The team kept the pressure on the Magherafelt goal but unfortunately time ran out and the final whistle sounded.

Overall the players acquitted themselves very well and the management team of Bill Kerr and Pat Condren were proud of their players on the day and look forward to developing the squad for the future. Man of the match (selected by the referee) was Ryan Miller.

Coleraine Under 15 Squad bowed out of this years NIBFA cup after going down 3-1 at Lisnagelvin on Saturday to Foyle Harps.  The match opened with both teams playing attacking football which resulted in Foyle Harps opening the scoring on 6 minutes when their centre forward nipped in to stab the ball home from 3 yards after a goalmouth scramble from a cross.  Undeterred the young Bannsiders settled into the game and Ryan Campbell came close to opening the scoring when a 20 yard shot skimmed the crossbar.  On 20 minutes Jamie McAllister pulled off a wonderful save low to his right to deny Harps.  The sides turned round at half time 1 - 0.  With barely two minutes on the clock of the second half Dean Henderson latched onto a clearance from the Harps defence to send a rasping 30 yard crashing into the Harps net leaving their goalkeeper grasping for air.  This spurred the young Bannsiders on and they continued to take the game to Harps.  With 16 minutes gone Harps were awarded a penalty with Scott McCann was adjudged to have handled the ball.  Harps duly converted and this left Coleraine chasing the game.  Despite pressure Coleraine could not find the net and with a minute to go Harps increased their lead when a clearance from a corner fell to a harps player who rifled it into the bottom corner.  A disappointing day for the boys.  Commenting Stevie McCann said the difference today was the level of desire, they wanted it more than us.  The boys are very disappointed but this is all about learning, if they learn to hate that feeling of disappointment then they will not want to experience it and that will make them hungry to win.  The Foyle Harps on the day deserved the win though I took some consolation when their manager commented to me that his boys learnt more today in 70 minutes against us then anytime over the last 2 years.  What didn’t help us has been no football for the last 3-4 weeks due to the weather, but no excuses Foyle Harps deserved to win and I wish them all the best.

On a frosty Saturday morning Coleraine took on Deanby Youth

The boys just did not get going during the first half and played well below their usual standard. Despite this they were able to stifle any attacks that Deanby could throw at them. Disaster struck however on 15 minutes when a failed clearance fell to an unmarked Deanby forward who managed to knock the ball into the Coleraine net. Coleraine 0 Deanby 1. The half saw no further scoring but it was Coleraine who had the better chances.

Changes were made at half time and stern words spoken to get the young Bannsiders to wrestle this game back. Sam Boylan and Stephen Doherty showed what a powerful paring they can be and Coleraine started to dominate the match. The best chance fell to Danny Lawder who was found by a wonderful ball from Stephen only for Danny to beat the oncoming keeper with his effort but not put enough power on the shot and a defender managed to clear the ball before it crossed the line. It looked like it was to be one of those days when Coleraine would not get any luck at all. With persistence Coleraine did manage to equalise, a free kick in their own half was pumped forward into the Deanby area. The ball was not cleared and top goal scorer Danny Lawder was on hand to prod a shot into the corner. This was no less than the boys deserved. Coleraine 1 Deanby 1.

It looked like this game was destined for extra time with the clock running down rapidly, further heartache was in store for the boys however when two minutes from time, another failed clearance fell to a Deanby player eight yards out and his snap shot arrowed into the goal. Coleraine 1 Deanby 2. There just wasn’t enough time left on the clock for the Coleraine outfit to equalise again and so the game finished with an undeserved defeat.

Referees man of the match- Paul Milligan, an outstanding defensive display throughout the entire game.

An impressive display by the Coleraine Academy`s under 17`s against an experienced Foyle Harps side was not enough to see them through to the semi finals of the NIBFA Cup. Coleraine started the game nervously and found it hard to settle and Harps took full advantage by taking an early two goal lead. The first came when the ball broke loose in the Coleraine box for Harps to finish from close range. Coleraine were caught on the break for the second when Harps launched a long clearance from defence and the striker was able to put the ball over the advancing keeper.  To Coleraine`s credit this spurred them into action and they started to play some good football and when Doherty looped a header over the keeper to pull one back it looked like game on.

The second half started with Coleraine dominating play and even when Harps scored a third they refused to lie down. McClemments thumped home Coleraine`s second and at this stage it would have to be said Harps looked a beaten team. McIvor drew things level and took the game to extra time with a superb left foot strike directly from a free kick. Extra time saw both teams create chances but with minutes left and both teams thinking of penalty`s the visitors stole the game. Coleraine will feel hard done to by this result and would probably have at least liked to have their chance in a penalty shootout but don`t be mistaken, the future of Coleraine FC Academy is bright and in this its first year the under 17`s have already set the standards high. A thrilling game with lots of great football, thanks to all who came along to support the team.
